PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University athletics program recognizes baseball's
Cy Fontenot, men's golf's
Blake Francis and women's tennis'
Alexandra Cedeno as this week's LCU Student-Athletes of the Week, with the men earning RRAC Pitcher and Golfer of the Week, respectively.
Â
Fontenot, a graduate student right-hander from Alexandria, Louisiana, won the epic battle between the two pitchers in the weekend series opener (his opposite number was 6-0 entering the day), going the scoreless and walkless distance for his fifth career complete game and first ever shutout, going one batter over the minimum. The local kid induced 14 groundouts (66.7% of all outs recorded) in addition to striking out a pair of Jaguars, limiting #10 UHV to just three hits and zero walks who were averaging just under nine runs per game coming in (8.9). On top of his inning of work in the win vs. Dillard, he tossed eight scoreless innings without a single walk and despite only striking out three batters, the former Southeastern Louisiana and New Orleans transfer produced a minuscule 0.63 WHIP. The six-foot hurler sports the second-best ERA on the team at 3.78, on top of leading the Wildcats in both innings pitched (47.2) as well as strikeouts (46).
Â
Francis, a junior from Rayne, Louisiana, put forth his highest single event ranking of his three-year LCU tenure in Bossier City, Louisiana, earning a spot in the top-five by virtue of a tie alongside Jacksonville (Texas) CC's Cooper Camp, each scoring a +5 (149) courtesy of seven birdies plus 19 pars, giving him positive result in an impressive 68.4% of holes (26-of-38). The Notre Dame High School product previously earned the honor on March 26, 2024, making it back-to-back seasons he has collected the hardware immediately following the Hal Sutton Invitational, adding it to his trophy case on top of winning the Red River Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year in 2023.
Â
Cedeno, a sophomore from Caracas, Miranda, Venezuela, won both of her singles competition on the fifth flight, defeating Ann-Clark Van of Copiah-Lincoln CC in dominant fashion (6-0, 6-1) before rallying back from a first set loss to Caroline Johnson to topple (RV) Mobile's racketeer by a final score of 3-6, 6-2 and 6-4. She teamed up with
Patricia Principal Pineda on the top doubles line in both matches as well, needing a tiebreaker to dispatch the Wolves' Yariange Bello / Munashe Bera (9
7-8
2) then handling the Rams' Lais Masuda / Karolina Mrowiecova with relative ease (6-2).
Â
The boys of spring look to continue their meteoric pace as they search for their 12th, 13th, and 14th wins in-a-row in San Antonio on Friday / Saturday during a three-game set at Our Lady of the Lake.
Â
Francis and his teammate
Cooper Ware are done competing in March with one last regular season tournament scheduled for April 7-8 in Brenham, Texas with Blinn College serving as the host institution.
Â
Tennis has announced its slate for the week which will consist of (RV) LSU Shreveport on Thursday (1 p.m.), Texas Wesleyan on Friday (1 p.m.), and #8 Xavier-Louisiana (10 a.m.) plus Texas A&M-Texarkana (2 p.m.) on Saturday, all inside the friendly confines of the
Richard L. Crowell Tennis Center.
