Wildcats Weather the Weather and Nelson for Homecoming Win

68-Minute Lightning Delay Can't Slow LCU in Dominant Win

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University football team scored 21 points in the second quarter sandwiched around a one-hour weather delay and pulled away for a 38-6 over the Nelson Lions Saturday on homecoming night at Wildcat Field.

After a couple empty drives, the points started coming late in the first quarter. Taking over at their own 40-yard line, the Wildcats (5-3, 4-1 SAC) methodically moved the ball down the field over 15 plays and hit paydirt as Bryce Perkins took it in from four yards out on a third and goal play. After Hilborn's point after split the uprights to end the 4:59-long drive, LCU led 7-0.

The Lions (1-5, 1-4 SAC) made it into LCU territory on their next possession, but the drive stalled, and a pooch punt by the Nelson quarterback downed the Wildcats at their own two-yard line.

But that was no issue for the Wildcats as LCU marched right down the field, which included several big plays. Perkins hit EJ Scott for a 35-yard gain to get away from the goal line. Jaterrius Johnson broke free for a 20-yard gain to get within scoring range. Two plays later, Datlan Cunningham broke loose for a 21-yard scoring scamper to extend the Wildcat lead to 14-0, ending the seven-play, 98-yard scoring drive which needed just 2:28 to complete.

After forcing a Lion three-and-out, the Wildcats were marching again, down at the Nelson 38-yard line after another 20-yard trot by Cunningham when the game was delayed by lightning. After an hour and eight minutes, the game picked back up, and so did the LCU offense as it took just two plays following the delay to get in the end zone again, this time on the legs of Johnson who bounded in from 10 yards out to make it 21-0 after the eight-play, 55-yard drive which took 2:38 in game time but nearly 90 minutes in real time.

Following a Nelson fumble, which Kendal Rowan recovered for the Wildcats, LCU marched towards the Lion goal line again. Facing third and goal from the Lion eight, Perkins shot a pass which Xavion Butler snagged in the end zone with just 40 seconds left in the first half, giving the Wildcats a 28-0 lead at halftime.

Well in control of things, the Wildcats went on to the business of closing out the contest. LCU's defense helped its offense out, stopping the Lions on a fourth down play to end a Nelson threat following a Wildcat turnover. The offense thanked the defense by extending its lead on the ensuing drive, going 47 yards over six plays in 2:06, the final 10 yards being covered by Perkins and Omarius Davis combining on a touchdown pass to make it 35-0 Wildcats.

Nelson got its first points in the game late in the third quarter on a 37-yard field goal.

Hilborn responded in the fourth with a 23-yard field goal to make it 38-3.

The game's final scoring play was a 39-yard field goal by the Lions as the LCU defense kept Nelson out of the end zone for the entirety of the 38-6 win.

Perkins finished the game hitting 12 of his 22 pass attempts for 153 yards and two scores.

Davis was his top option as he caught five of those passes for 79 yards and a score.

Scott had four receptions for 57 yards while Butler had three catches for 17 yards and a touchdown.

Cunningham was handed the rock 21 times for 112 yards and a touchdown, a 5.3 yard per carry average.

Johnson had 17 rushes for 84 yards and a score as well.

Jordan Oglesby led the defense with six total tackles.

Kylon Polk forced a fumble, which Rowan recovered, and came up with an interception to go with his three tackles on the day.

LCU finished the day with 433 total yards, 278 of which came on the ground, while holding Nelson to just 217 yards of offense. The Wildcats also won the turnover battle, forcing the Lions into two turnovers while LCU committed one.

The Wildcats continue their three-game homestand next Saturday when Texas College comes to Pineville. Kickoff against the Steers (0-6, 0-5 SAC) is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Field.
