Grogan Picks Off Two Passes, Wildcats Give #7 Texas Wesleyan Fits In Shootout

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University football program recovered a surprise onside kick to begin the game, marched down the field and scored, a foreshadowing of the fight that the Wildcats gave the unbeaten, high-flying #7 Rams on Saturday, holding the 2024 SAC champions to their lowest margin of victory in eight weeks during a 63-42 Senior Day setback.

The 42 points given up by the TXWES defense is the most allowed by that unit all season long as the Orange and Blue won the time of possession battle by over seven minutes in addition to outgaining Texas Wesleyan by 119 yards through the air and 73 total yards.

Wildcats Top Performers:

  • Trae Grogan had himself one heck of a contest, becoming the first student-athlete with multiple interceptions since Bennie Clark III in the 2022 season opener at SAGU.

                             * The converted wide receiver turned defensive back returned Carson Rodgers' two errant throws ten yards in the other direction, picking up four tackles (three solo) as well.

  • Senior Ethan Christman joined EJ Scott as the second LCU route runner to amass 200-plus receiving yards in a game this year, popping off career-highs in every category as his family watched him don the Cats helmet one last time, catching six balls for 226 yards (37.7 YPC) and two scores, including the team's longest play from scrimmage in 2024; an 86-yard beautiful touchdown down the TWU sideline.

  • Senior Kavan Touriac led the defense with eight total tackles and tied for the game's most tackles for loss at two, a season-best.

  • Freshman Jermarian Jackson has turned into a building block on the defensive line for Tyson Andrus, racking up multiple TFLs (1.5) for the third game in-a-row as part of his six tackles.

  • Senior Daylon Charles tried to will his squad to one more win, averaging 6.2 yards per carry spread out across 162 rushing yards for his sixth 100-plus outing on the ground this season and touchdown numbers 17, 18, and 19 to tie his career-high for the fourth time.

  • Senior Logan Brimmer chased the signal-caller back 21 yards for LCU's only sack of the afternoon, adding another half-TFL to his half-dozen takedown ledger.

  • Datlan Cunningham and EJ Scott were the Robin to their Batmans (Charles and Christman, respectively), with the former gaining 55 yards rushing and finding paydirt for the fourth time while the latter tied for the team lead with six receptions for 82 yards receiving.

  • River Thompson compiled a passer rating of 111.6, dialing up chunk plays to the tune of 366 yards and a pair of tuddys, completing 17-of-29 (58.6%).

  • Worth mentioning was Trent Ginn's lone punt return which he brought back 37 yards, Jahiem Mitchell's multiple pass breakups for the fourth time in five contests, plus Noah James notching his first career tackle for loss and quarterback hurry.

Next:

  • LCU ended Ben McLaughlin's debut campaign at 4-7 (36.4%) overall and 3-5 (37.5%) in the Sooner Athletic Conference, going 3-3 (50%) on the road.
