PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University baseball team hit four home runs during Saturday's doubleheader against Huston-Tillotson, three of which came off
Ju'Juan Franklin's bat in the Wildcats' dominant sweep of the Rams, taking game 1 10-1 before winning game 2 15-2 in run rule fashion at Billy Allgood Field at Legacy Stadium.
Game 1 – Huston-Tillotson 1, Louisiana Christian 10
After a 1-6-3 double play ended a runners on the corners, one out threat in the top of the first inning with no runs scoring, the Wildcat hitters jumped all over the Huston-Tillotson starting pitcher as
Adrian Aguilar,
Alex Ashby, and
Ju'Juan Franklin went back-to-back-to-back with doubles to lead off the bottom of the first with Ashby and Franklin knocking in the previous batter. With one out,
Peyton Lamartiniere traded places with Franklin with another double to make it 3-0 LCU when the first inning finally ended.
With
Dylan David standing on first base and one out in the second inning,
Adrian Aguilar cranked his second double of the first two innings, finding the left-center gap which allowed David to race all the way around to home for a 4-0 lead. With Aguilar on third and
Alex Ashby on second and still one out,
Ju'Juan Franklin launched his first home run of the day, a three-run blast, making the score 7-0 when the second inning ended.
LCU extended the lead in the third inning with a big two-out rally. With
Beau Freeman standing on second base and two outs,
Adrian Aguilar dropped a base hit to right, scoring Freeman.
Alex Ashby followed that with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Aguilar from first. Following a pitching change, Ashby took off for third base, and the throw to try and catch him stealing went wild, allowing him to come in and score as well, making the score 10-0 LCU.
With the game well in hand, the Wildcats relied on the pitching of
Cortlynn Ramirez and the defense the rest of the way, allowing the Rams to score on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning but nothing more to close out the series-opening win.
Adrian Aguilar was a perfect four for four at the plate in game one with two double, two RBI, and three runs scored.
Alex Ashby was three for four with two doubles, two RBI, a stolen base, and three runs scored.
Ju'Juan Franklin went two for three in game one, including his third home run for the season but not his last for the day, a double, four RBI, and two runs scored.
Peyton Lamartiniere went one for three with a double and a RBI.
Beau Freeman went two for three, stole a base, and scored a run. Nine of LCU's 12 hits in the game came from Aguilar, Ashby, & Franklin, the top third of the Wildcat line-up in the contest.
Cortlynn Ramirez (6-0) went the distance in the win, giving up nine hits and just one, unearned, run in the scheduled seven inning game with no walks and five strikeouts.
Game 2 – Huston-Tillotson 2, Louisiana Christian 15 (7 innings)
After a double play and a diving stab of a line drive by
Beau Freeman at second base kept the Rams off the board even with two walks and a base hit in the frame, the Wildcats put together a big two-out rally in the bottom half of the inning.
With the bases empty and two outs,
Ju'Juan Franklin started the rally with his second home run of the day to put the Wildcats up for good. After a double, a walk, and a wild pitch put runners on second and third, another wild pitch allowed Nick Bruney to score from third base before
Peyton Lamartiniere sent a base hit back up the middle, scoring
Beau Freeman from third for a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
After Huston-Tillotson scored one in the top of the third inning, LCU blew game two open in the bottom half with five runs in the frame. After a trio of walks loaded the bases to open the inning,
Peyton Lamartiniere belted a hit over the left fielder's head for a double, scoring both
Nick Brunet and
Ju'Juan Franklin. Two batters later,
Ty Morgan launched a three-run home run over the wall in left-center field to give the Wildcats an 8-1 lead as Lamartiniere and
Beau Freeman touched the plate with Morgan.
Alex Ashby led off the fourth inning with a double, and then
Ju'Juan Franklin and
Nick Brunet were both hit by pitches to load the bases with no outs.
Beau Freeman took care of that with one swing as he found the right-center gap and raced all the way around with a bases-clearing triple to put the Wildcats up 11-1.
Nicolas Ramos drew a walk later in the inning, and then sacrificed himself trying to steal second base in order to clear the path allowing Freeman to take home, making the score 12-1.
In the fifth inning,
Adrian Aguilar led off the frame with a double and
Alex Ashby drew a walk before
Ju'Juan Franklin belted his second home run of game two, and third home run of the day, a towering, three-run, shot to left that gave the Wildcats a 15-1 lead through five complete innings.
LCU surrendered a run in the top of the sixth, but that would be all the scoring either team accomplished in the nightcap in the Wildcats' 15-2 win.
Ju'Juan Franklin saw the ball well in game two, going two for two with both of his hits going over the wall for home runs, his fourth and fifth home runs of the season. He also drew a walk, knocked in four runs, and scored four times in the contest.
Beau Freeman was also two for two as he hit a triple, drew a walk, knocked in three runs and touched home plate three times.
Ty Morgan went two for three, including his second home run of the season, drew a walk, knocked in three runs, and scored a run.
Peyton Lamartiniere went two for three with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.
Alex Ashby went two for three with a double, a walk, and two runs scored.
Brooks Southall (5-0) went 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and two runs, both earned, walked three and struck out two to get the win on the mound.
Rett Bowman pitched the final 1.2 innings and gave up just one hit and no runs with no walks and two strikeouts.
With the series win already in hand, the Wildcats (17-6, 11-3 RRAC) look to complete the sweep of the Rams (7-16, 5-9 RRAC) on Sunday with the rain delayed single game. First pitch of the final game of the series is set for noon at Billy Allgood Field at Legacy Stadium.
