Wildcats Complete Dominant Sweep of Jarvis Christian

LCU Averages 13 Runs Per Game in Three-Game Sweep of Bulldogs

HAWKINS, Texas – The Louisiana Christian University baseball team finished off its first series sweep of a Red River Athletic Conference opponent, dominating both games of the doubleheader against Jarvis Christian to defeat the Bulldogs 14-2 and 16-3 Monday afternoon at Bulldogs Field.

Game 1 – Louisiana Christian 14, Jarvis Christian 2

Jarvis Christian took the early lead in game one, striking in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. But the Wildcats quickly got in front in the top of the second inning as Peyton Lamartiniere opened the inning with a base hit, moved to second on a passed ball, moved to third and scored on two separate wild pitches to tie the score. After drawing a walk to get on base, Nicolas Ramos moved to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Adrian Aguilar to give LCU the lead to stay. Beau Freeman reached on a walk, moved to second on one of the aforementioned passed balls, and scored on Alex Ashby's RBI single to put the Wildcats up 3-1 when the second inning ended.

The wild ways of Jarvis pitching continued to aid the Wildcats in the third. Ju'Juan Franklin led off the frame with a walk, stole second and moved to third when the throw went awry, and scored on a passed ball. Ty Morgan also drew a free pass to first base and Dru Scully came in to run for him. Scully stole second, moved to third on the passed ball that scored Franklin, and came home on a successful double steal with Lamartiniere which gave the Wildcats a 5-1 lead after three complete innings. Jarvis got one of those runs back in the bottom half off a solo home run to cut the lead to 5-2 when the third inning ended.

But the game was all but put out of reach in the fourth inning as Ty Morgan dropped a pitch over the wall while Franklin and Aguilar were on base for a three-run home run to make it 8-2 Wildcats through four complete. Keelyn Johnson's double in the sixth scored Alex Ashby to make it 9-2. LCU put up five in the seventh, and final, inning to really salt the game away. Zachary Trangmar's base hit scored Nicolas Ramos and Nick Brunet. Jacob Fowler's ground ball to first scored Dylan David, and Keelyn Johnson put an exclamation point on the contest with a two-run home run for the game's final score.

Keelyn Johnson, Alex Ashby, and Nick Brunet all went two-for-four at the plate in game one. Johnson's two hits were a double and a home run that scored three runs while he scored once. The home run was his third of the season. Brunet's two hits were both doubles and he scored once. Ashby's stole a base, scored once, and knocked in a run with his two singles. Ty Morgan's three-run home run was his first of the season.

Cortlynn Ramirez (3-0) threw 5.1 innings and allowed four hits and two runs, both earned, walked two and struck out five as he picked up the win. Dylan Coburn closed things out with 1.2 innings of work and gave up just one hit and no runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

Game 2 – Louisiana Christian 16, Jarvis Christian 3

After two scoreless innings started the contest, LCU jumped on Jarvis in the third inning. Keelyn Johnson singled in Alex Ashby, Ju'Juan Franklin's ground ball to the mound was botched, allowing Johnson to score. Ty Morgan then cranked a triple that allowed Franklin to score. Peyton Lamartiniere's ground ball to short was also booted, allowing Dru Scully to score for a 4-0 Wildcat lead.

LCU blew the game open with three more runs in the fourth. Alex Ashby's triple scored Nick Moreau. Ashby scored on a passed ball, and then Keelyn Johnson scored on Peyton Lamartiniere's sacrifice fly. Jarvis got one back in the bottom half on a bases loaded walk that made the score 7-1 after four complete innings.

Ju'Juan Franklin singled in Alex Ashby to give LCU an 8-1 lead after five. It would stay that way until the seventh inning when Keelyn Johnson scored on a botched throw to catch another base runner, while another error by the Bulldog catcher allowed Franklin home for a 10-1 lead. Jarvis put up single scratches up in the bottom of the seventh and in the eighth to lessen the LCU lead to 10-3.

However, the Wildcats exploded in the ninth inning for six runs to put the game out of hand. Nick Moreau scored on a passed ball, Zachary Trangmar doubled in both Adrian Aguilar and Dru Scully while Trangmar later scored on a passed ball of his own. Beau Freeman ended the scoring with a double that plated both Nick Brunet and Noah Gaspard.

Ju'Juan Franklin and Beau Freeman were both two-for-five in the nightcap. Franklin stole a base, knocked in two runs and scored twice while Freeman hit a double and knocked in two runs. Keelyn Johnson was one-for-three with a pair of walks and stolen bases, knocked in two RBI, and scored three times. Alex Ashby hit a triple, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch, stole three bases, and scored three times.

In five innings of work, Tripp Flotte (2-0) did not allow a hit but did surrender one unearned run, walked two, and struck out eight. Blake Windham allowed four hits and two runs, both earned, with three walks and five strikeouts in four innings of work to get his first save of the season.

The Wildcats (11-3, 5-1 RRAC) step out of conference play for a Mardi Gras Mambo with #12 Loyola-New Orleans on Tuesday, looking to extend their current four-game win streak. First pitch of the contest against the #12 Wolf Pack (9-9) on Mardi Gras Day is set for 3:00 P.M. at Billy Allgood Field at Legacy Stadium.
