PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University softball team finished its four-game in two-day Mardi Gras weekend home stand with four run-rule wins, knocking off Southeastern Baptist 13-5 in walk-off fashion in the sixth inning in game one before taking down the Chargers 11-2 in five innings in game two Sunday afternoon at Wildcat Park.
Game 1 – Southeastern Baptist 5, Louisiana Christian 13 (6 innings)
After getting behind 2-0 in the top of the second inning, the Wildcats tied things up as
Olivia Coaker drew a walk with the bases loaded to force home
Hailey Vitrano. The very next at-bat didn't last long either as
Miah Broussard was hit by a pitch for force in
Lexie Marks to tie the score at 2-2.
But the Chargers had an answer in the top of the third, getting those two runs back to reclaim a 4-2 lead. However, LCU's offense found its groove in the fourth inning and the runs came in droves. Another bases loaded walk, this one to
KayeLea Dearmon, forced in
Olivia Coaker to get the Wildcats back within one. LCU took the lead and would not give it up when
Brooke Ross's ground ball to short was thrown away, scoring both Broussard and
Meredith Perry. Ross and Candice Hobbs both came home on
BreAnna Corkern's single to right-center which put the Wildcats up 7-4.
SBC came back with a RBI single in the fifth to get one of those runs back, but LCU got it right back in the bottom half on
Olivia Coaker's solo shot to straight away center field. The Wildcats put things away in the sixth inning as
Emma Hunt's base hit to left-center got away from the left fielder, allowing both Corkern and
Lexie Marks to score for an 10-5 lead. Hunt would come home on Coaker's RBI single through the left side.
KayeLea Dearmon called game with a base hit through the right side that allowed both Coaker and
Brianna Lopez to score to enact the run-rule and end the game.
Olivia Coaker continued her hot streak at the plate, going three-for-three in game one with a double and a homer, her fifth home run of the season, a walk, three RBI, and three runs scored.
KayeLea Dearmon went one-for-three with three RBI.
BreAnna Corkern went two-for-three with a double, two stolen bases, two RBI, and a run scored.
Emma Hunt,
Miah Broussard, and
Brooke Ross picked up a RBI apiece in the contest.
Miah Broussard (3-0) went the distance by throwing all six innings and gave up 12 hits and five runs, four earned, walked one and struck out nine.
Game 2 – Southeastern Baptist 2, Louisiana Christian 11 (5 innings)
Much like game one, the Wildcats found themselves trailing as the Chargers opened the scoring when the second batter of the game homered to put SBC up 1-0. But LCU took no time jumping all over the Chargers to put the game out of reach. In the bottom of the first,
Lexie Marks brought home
Emma Hunt to tie the score with a base hit through the right side. Marks came home on
Olivia Coaker's RBI single up the middle.
Kayla Dauthier's bunt was laid down perfectly to allow Coaker to score.
McKenzie Montgomery later laid down her own bunt to score Dauthier.
Hailey Vitrano then got a piece of a pitch that got under the right fielder's glove and rolled to the wall for a triple that scored Montgomery. Vitrano came home on
Ashlyn Welch's single to the shortstop for a 6-1 Wildcat lead when the first inning finally ended.
The game was put thoroughly out of reach in the second inning.
Kayla Dauthier also found right field accommodating as she also hit a ball that way that rolled to the wall for a triple as
Lexie Marks raced around to score.
McKenzie Montgomery brought Dauthier home on a single to right. With the bases now loaded,
Ashlyn Welch sent a shot up the middle that scored both Montgomery and Kaitlynn King to make the score 10-1 as the second inning closed.
Kayla Dauthier added a bit of insurance in the third as her base hit to left scored
Lexie Marks for an 11-1 lead. The Chargers got another solo homer in the fourth but would push no more runs across as the game ended following the top of the fifth inning.
Lexie Marks and
Kayla Dauthier both went three-for-three in the second game with Marks hitting a double, knocking in a run, and scoring three times while Dauthier hit a double and a triple, knocked in three runs and scored twice.
McKenzie Montgomery and
Ashlyn Welch were both two-for-tow with Montgomery batting in two runs and scoring twice herself while Welch knocked in three runs, stole a base, and drew a walk.
Hailey Vitrano tripled, knocked in a run, and scored a run as well.
Addison Greak (2-0) went three innings and gave up one run, which was earned, on one hit walked one, and struck out two.
McKenna Gehr threw one inning and gave up one run, which was earned, on one hit with one strikeout and no walks.
Mary Madilynn Bennett finished things out by throwing one inning and allowing one hit but no runs with no walks or strikeouts.
The Wildcats (11-3) saw their scheduled Monday doubleheader at Blue Mountain College canceled due to wet field conditions following weekend rains. LCU will now be in action on Tuesday on the road at the Mississippi University for Women. Tip-off of the Mardi Gras Day doubleheader against the Owls (6-4) is set for 1:00 P.M. in Columbus, Miss. at the Don Usher Softball Field.
