Jacobs’ Late Goal Gives Wildcats RRAC-Opening Win

PK, Set Piece Prove Vital in Comeback Win Over HTU

ROUND ROCK, Texas – After erasing a second half deficit, the Louisiana College women's soccer team found the game winner in the closing moments of its first match in Red River Athletic Conference play from a direct free kick by Lindsey Jacobs to give the Wildcats a 3-2 win over the Huston-Tillotson Rams Thursday afternoon at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.

It didn't take long for the Wildcats to find their first goal against a RRAC foe in a RRAC match as Lindsey Jacobs sent a pass to Martina Terra Garcia, and Terra Garcia took it from there, beating the goalkeeper for a 1-0 LC lead in just the 14th minute.

But that lead didn't make it to halftime as Huston-Tillotson equalized off a 38th minute corner kick to bring the score level at 1-1 at the break.

A quick counter helped bring about the match's third goal as the Wildcats were whistled for a foul in the box, putting the Rams on the penalty spot. The Rams converted from the spot in the 48th minute to give HTU a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats went on the offensive, now in search of an equalizing goal. And after several near misses over the next ten minutes, that work finally paid off as Huston-Tillotson was called for its own foul in the box against LC. Martina Terra Garcia took the ball and placed it on the spot, and then calmly placed the goal past the Ram goalkeeper and into the net to level the score at 2-2 in the 69th minute.

For the final 20-plus minutes, it was a race for the game winner with the Wildcats holding the better side of the possession and run of play. That pressure on HTU's goal would finally prove fruitful as once again the Rams were whistled for a foul, but this time it was just outside of the box to give the Wildcats a free kick from a very dangerous position. Lindsey Jacobs put her foot into the free kick from about 20 yards out and from the left side of the goal and found the back of the net for that game-winning goal in the 88th minute, proving to be the match's final true action before the final whistle.

"Today was a milestone day for our team," said Louisiana College Head Women's Soccer Coach Carla Tejas. "Not just because this was our first win in our new conference, but because we had to fight from behind all the way to the last minute to get this win. Huston-Tillotson defended very well when they were up 2-1, but the girls showed their character when it was needed the most today, equalizing inside the final half-hour and then winning the game in the last two minutes of the match."

Martina Terra Garcia's two goals were her sixth and seventh goals of the season. She took a team-high eight shots in the match to get those two goals, putting five shots on target during the contest. Lindsey Jacobs' goal came on her lone shot of the contest and was her first game-winning goal of the year. She was also credited with her fourth assist of the season on LC's first goal in the match. The Wildcats took 16 total shots in the contest, efficiently putting 12 of them on frame.

Jessica Carro Pedreira (5-1) worked all 90 minutes in goal for the Wildcats to come out of the contest with the win. Huston-Tillotson put up four shots in the match, putting two on frame.

The Wildcats (5-1, 1-0 RRAC) look to go through the first weekend of conference play undefeated on Saturday in Victoria, Texas against Houston-Victoria. Kickoff against the Jaguars (5-2, 1-0 RRAC) is set for 1:00 P.M. at The Cage on UHV's campus.
