Willey Tenth Inning Home Run Caps Comeback Win Over Ozarks

Victory Gives LC Key Series Win as Season Nears Completion

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – The Louisiana College baseball team rallied in the ninth inning to force extra innings, and Austin Willey's one swing of the bat gave the Wildcats the runs needed to complete the comeback and pick up an important road series win by defeating the Ozarks Eagles in the series finale 7-4 Sunday afternoon at Lonnie R. Qualls Field.

The Wildcats used the big bat to open the scoring in the top of the first inning as Ju'Juan Franklin came up with Alex Ashby standing on second base and put two runs on the board with a home run to left to put LC up 2-0.

Ozarks pulled one back in the bottom of the first and then in the fourth the Eagles took the lead with a two-spot in the frame to lead 3-2 after four. In the sixth inning, an error allowed another Eagles run to cross to make it 4-2 Ozarks as the game reached its final three scheduled innings.

Some loss on control helped the Wildcats get one of those runs back in the seventh inning. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with two outs for Alex Ashby, who also watched ball four fly by out of the zone to draw his own base on balls and force in Ty Morgan to cut the deficit down to 4-3.

With the bases empty and the Wildcats down to their last out, Jacob Fowler got a rally going with a pinch hit base hit back up the middle to get the tying run on the base paths. Tyrese Morgan, who took Fowler's spot on first, stole second to get into scoring position. Christian Vandergrift leveled the score back up as he dropped a base hit into the right-center gap to score Morgan from second to make it 4-4.

With no more runs coming across in the ninth, the series would come down to extra innings. Ju'Juan Franklin drew ball four with one out to get the leading run on base. Beau Freeman was then hit by a pitch to reach as well, which brought up Austin Willey. Willey maximized the chance before him as he found a pitch he liked and drove it over the left field wall for a three-run home run and put the Wildcats up 7-4.

Ozarks didn't exactly go quietly as the lead-off batter in the bottom half of the tenth singled back up the middle to get on, but the Eagles still needed to get another runner on to get the tying run to the plate. The Eagles would never get the tying run to the plate as the next three batters got outs to end the game and give LC a crucial series victory.

Ju'Juan Franklin went one-for-three as his fourth home run of the season accounted for both of his RBI and one of his two runs scored. He also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch. Austin Willey went one-for-five, but it was the biggest possible one as his first home run of the season was the game-winner and represented all three of his RBI and his run scored. Brodie Falgoust went one-for-three with a RBI and Alex Ashby picked up a RBI and a run scored.

Andrew Robinson (5-1) came out of the pen in the fourth inning and finished the contest to pick up the win as he threw 6.1 innings and gave up six hits and one unearned run with no walks and seven strikeouts. Dylan Roark started and threw 3.2 innings and gave up eight hits and three runs, all earned, walked three and struck out two.

The Wildcats (22-11, 18-6 ASC) begin the final week of the regular season on Tuesday with a make up of a rained out, non-conference game against Loyola. First pitch of the regular season home finale against the Wolf Pack (30-11, 13-2 SSAC) is set for 6:00 P.M. at Billy Allgood Field at Legacy Stadium.
