Wildcats Finish Season with Rout of Texas College

LCU Scores Program-Record 77 Points to Close 2021 Campaign

PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana Christian University football team finished off its inaugural run through the Sooner Athletic Conference in a record-breaking way, scoring the most points in a game in program history as the Wildcats scored twice in the opening five minutes and rolled to a 77-12 win over the Texas College Steers Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.

The rout began almost immediately as the Wildcats took in the opening kickoff and methodically moved down the field, capping the ten-play drive with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Sal Palermo III to Micah Dunn to open the scoring. On the ensuing kickoff, the Steer returner lost the ball and D'Andre James picked up the loose ball and ran 14 yards to the end zone for the score and a 14-0 LCU lead with not even five minutes having come off the clock.

LCU's defense wanted in on the scoring fun, and it would on Texas College's first actual offensive possession as Tyren Young intercepted a fourth-and-two pass from the Steer quarterback and returned it 54 yards for a touchdown as the Wildcat lead grew to 21-0 right at the midway point of the first quarter. Palermo and Dunn connected again on a 30-yard touchdown pass to make he score 28-0 as the first quarter ended.

The second quarter was the Markaylin Milburn show as the running back, on his senior day, scored twice in the period, once from seven yards out and the other time from three yards out, to put LCU up 41-0 before the Steers responded with a score of their own shortly before halftime. At the break, the Wildcats led 41-6.

Three plays into the third quarter, it was the defense again that upped LCU's lead as Andre Reed sacked the Steer quarterback in the end zone for a safety and two more points to the Wildcats side of the scoreboard. From there, the third quarter scoring was a Sal Palermo III 23-yard touchdown pass to Zion Williams, a 58-yard punt return for a score by Me'kyle Franklin, and a one-yard touchdown plunge by Cole Fournet that gave LCU a 63-6 lead heading into the final period of the season.

With James Powell, Jr. now at quarterback for the Wildcats, Powell tossed the ball ahead to Raul Aranda, who got to the corner of the end zone to score. Texas College got back on the board with a 34-yard scoring pass to cut the Wildcat lead. But it would be the Wildcats with the last say in things as Gabe Bulliard punched the ball into the end zone from seven yards out to close the scoring.

Sal Palermo III went ten-of-13 through the air for 117 yards, three passing touchdowns, and an interception. James Powell, Jr. completed both passes he attempted, both little tosses to Raul Aranda, for 11 yards and a score.

Zion Williams finished the game with three catches for 48 yards and a score. Micah Dunn had two catches on the day for 39 yards and both ended in the end zone. Markaylin Milburn rushed 16 times for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns. As a team, the Wildcats ran the ball 46 times for 312 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.

Ernest Simon and Tyren Young led the defense with six tackles each, including a sack apiece, while Young also added the 54-yard interception return for a touchdown to his stat line. Andre Reed finished with five tackles, two and a half sacks, and the safety.

While it was a slow start to the season, the Wildcats finished their first run through a NAIA schedule and the Sooner Athletic Conference by winning four of their last six games, including an upset of a top-15 ranked team at the time. They finished the season 4-7 overall and 4-5 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
