PINEVILLE, La. – In a season of numerous firsts for the Louisiana College women's soccer team, one of the most notable of late is the streak of three straight opponents who haven't found the back of the net against the Wildcats, a streak that ran to four games as Texas A&M-Texarkana also failed to score in LC's 5-0 win over the Eagles Thursday night at Wildcat Field.
The Wildcats got all the goals required to pick up the win before the clock hit 15 minutes into the contest as
Valerie Greer sent the ball out wide to
Stephanie Doran, who saw a lane to the goal and took it, beating the keeper for a 1-0 lead in the 15
th minute.
LC added a pair of quick shot goals later in the first half. First, in the 34
th minute, Laura Pérez Velasco sent the ball back into space for
Lindsey Jacobs. Jacobs, finding herself alone at 36 yards out, decided to shoot and found the back of the net for a 2-0 LC lead. A minute later, Jacobs found herself on the other end as she sent a long ball into the box that
Martina Terra Garcia got on the end of, turned on her defender in motion and beat the Eagle goalkeeper to the top right corner for a 3-0 Wildcats lead, which would be the halftime score.
To prove there would be no shot at a comeback, the Wildcats added two more in the second half. The first came in the 69
th minute as
Martina Terra Garcia lifted a pass over the top that
Stephanie Doran ran onto behind the Eagle defense and beat the keeper for a 4-0 lead.
LC's final goal came in the 76
th minute as
Jazmine Jamison sent a ball out wide to
Isabella Campos Paniagua, who sent the ball into the box and saw it tail over the keeper's outstretched hands and into the goal for a 5-0 Wildcat lead. The Wildcats looked to have another goal right at the final siren, but it was ruled to have crossed the goal line after the clock ran out and was disallowed.
"Today was a special day for our program," said Louisiana College head women's soccer coach
Carla Tejas. "It's not just because of the scoreboard, but because we've decided as a team to dedicate our final seven matches of the regular season, starting with tonight, to every woman who has fought or is fighting breast cancer. Today, the team showed what the culture of our program is made of, which is about more than just soccer. I'm very happy with the result, but even happier with how the girls continue to show their character. Now we need to focus and work towards Saturday's contest against the defending conference champions in LSU Shreveport."
It was a momentous day for both
Martina Terra Garcia and
Stephanie Doran, who both crossed into double digits in the number of goals scored on the season, a number that has been elusive to Wildcat attackers of the past.
Stephanie Doran scored twice, her ninth and tenth goals of the season, on five shots with three on frame.
Martina Terra Garcia scored her tenth goal of the season and was credited with her fourth assist as she took a team-high six shots in the contest with three on target. It was Terra Garcia's shot that rolled into the goal less than a second after the final siren started to sound.
Lindsey Jacobs' shot from long range was one of five she took on the night, one of two put on frame, and went in for her third goal of the season. She was also credited with her seventh assist of the year.
Isabella Campos Paniagua's odd-angle goal was her first of the season as she took two shots in the match, putting both on frame.
Valerie Greer and Laura Pérez Velasco each picked up their second assists of the season while
Jazmine Jamison was credited with her first helper on the year. The Wildcats took a total of 36 shots and put 17 on frame in the match.
Jessica Carro Pedreira (9-1) was called on to make just one save, which came on a shot in the 33
rd minute following a turnover right at the top of the box that saw her face-to-face with the TAMUT shot taker, a shot that went straight into Carro Pedreira's waiting hands. After that, Carro Pedreira did not have to make another save as the Eagles took just two shots in the match overall, only that one being on target. This was the fourth straight match to end in a clean sheet for the Wildcats, third done as a solo performance in net by Carro Pedreira with a combined clean sheet by Carro Pedreira and
Bailey Danton against Texas A&M-San Antonio representing the fourth. It has been 402 minutes since the Wildcats conceded the second goal to Huston-Tillotson in LC's RRAC-opening match, which is the most recent goal against the LC defense and goalkeeping.
The Wildcats (9-1, 5-0 RRAC) now look to hit double-digit wins for the first time on Saturday on the road against the spring 2021 LSU Shreveport. Kickoff against the Pilots (3-5-3, 1-3-1 RRAC) is set for 1:00 P.M. at The Swamp on the LSUS campus.
