PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men's soccer team heads into its postseason with a lot of positive momentum as the Wildcats got a brace from
Alvaro Tudanca to knock off the Texas College Steers 3-0 Saturday night at Wildcat Field to end the season with a winning record and close out 2021 with a three-match win streak.
LC's first goal came in the 39
th minute as the Wildcats took advantage of a free kick.
Alvaro Tudanca, as he has all season, stood over top of the ball, and slotted the free kick inside the post for the goal to put LC on top. That 1-0 score would hold to halftime.
The Wildcats added to it in the 54
th minute, and again it was off a free kick involving Tudanca. This time, the free kick was from only 20 yards out, but was from the far-right side of the pitch. Tudanca got the bend he needed, and it got past the goalkeeper and went into net to make it 2-0 LC.
Just three minutes later, LC's closed the match out with the final goal of the season as
Adrian Amoros Navarro slipped a nicely weighted pass into the path of
Nangee Philip and Philip dribbled around the goalkeeper and tapped the ball into the net for the last score.
"We ended on a great run of form," said Louisiana College head men's soccer coach
David Castillo. "Even though it wasn't enough to clinch a postseason berth, I am still proud of the adversity the guys overcame. We are young and competed as a first-year program in the NAIA. Thank you to everyone who supported us along the way from fans and staff. We won't give up and will keep pushing forward to become a successful program."
Alvaro Tudanca took five shots and put three on frame to get his two goals, which were his ninth and tenth of the season. Tudanca finished the season with goals in three-straight contests. On his senior day,
Nangee Philip put both shots he took on target, including his seventh goal of the season. Philip also finished the season on a three-match goal-scoring streak. The Wildcats took 18 shots in the match with three on frame.
Martin Hernandez (7-3) saw 11 Steer shots head his way, but only had to stop one from going into the net, which he did, to collect his first career collegiate clean sheet.
The Wildcats complete their 2021 season with a 10-7 record, the team's first season with ten or more wins since 2013, and went 5-6 in their first run through the Red River Athletic Conference.
