PINEVILLE, La. – It's been a long while since one could say a Louisiana College women's soccer team match had "stakes", but the battle of two undefeated teams in Red River Athletic Conference play in the early part of the schedule certainly had some and the Wildcats rose to the occasion, shutting down a potent Our Lady of the Lake offense and collecting two goals in a 2-0 win over the Saints Saturday morning at Wildcat Field.
Under the early morning fog, a ray of light shined down on the Wildcats in the 20
th minute as
Martina Terra Garcia attacked into the box, an OLLU defender got a foot on the ball to knock it away. But that tap unwittingly sent the ball back right in prime position for
Andrea Garcia Vargas, who teed up the perfectly placed ball and smashed the shot from 23 yards out inside the right post for the match's first goal.
From that point on, the match was all about snuffing out the other team's chances as both teams made runs on goal. But with the run of play mostly on LC's offensive side of the pitch, the Wildcats went in search for the goal that would ice the full three points from the match. And that goal finally came in the 87
th minute off some strong play from the Wildcats.
Lindsey Jacobs used her body to knock a Saints player off the ball and took possession. She then slid a perfect through ball towards the top of the box that
Martina Terra Garcia was able to get on as she used her body to shield away a defending Saints player. As soon as Terra Garcia got to the ball, and with the defender out of the way, she took a one-time shot that got under the OLLU goalkeeper and into the net to assure the LC win.
"Our Lady of the Lake is always one of the best teams in the conference," said Louisiana College head women's soccer coach
Carla Tejas. "They are strong on every level and being able to get this result should give our girls the confidence for the coming matches. This win reflects all the hard work the girls have put in as well as my assistant coaches, Kayleigh [Lambrechts] and Ariel [Castanon]. Even with as big as this win is for the program, there is still plenty of work to do and areas that we need to improve in over the coming days because each match just gets more and more important, and we have 2 important matches this coming week that we must get ready for."
Martina Terra Garcia's goal was her team-leading ninth score of the season as she took five shots in the contest and put four on frame.
Andrea Garcia Vargas scored her second goal, her first credited as the game-winning goal, of the season on her only shot in the match.
Emma Monnet and Laura Baú Magleau took two shots each with one on frame each.
Lindsey Jacobs took two shots with one on frame and her assist on Terra Garcia's goal was her sixth assist of the year. The Wildcats peppered the OLLU goal with 16 shots, ten of which were on frame.
Jessica Carro Pedreira (7-1) didn't have all too much to do during the match as OLLU sent four shots her way in the contest. The only two shots she had to act on were crosses tailing too close to goal, which she easily pounced on to keep out of the net.
The Wildcats (7-1, 4-0 RRAC) look to keep the momentum from this result going into another home match on Thursday at Texas A&M-Texarkana comes to town for a conference match-up. Kickoff against the Eagles (5-4-1, 1-2-1 RRAC) is set for 5:00 P.M. Thursday evening at Wildcat Field.
