ALPINE, Texas – The Louisiana College women's basketball team rode the hot hand of Fr. G
ZyUnn Cormier to pull back a late deficit, and then Jr. G
Christina Canale's buzzer beater forced overtime, but it wasn't to be for the Wildcats in a 63-59 loss to the Sul Ross St. Lobos Thursday evening at the Pete P. Gallego Center.
The Wildcats found themselves trailing 49-38 with 6:00 left in the game but went on a 6-0 run to cut that deficit down to five points as
Kayla Kinney connected on a pair of free throws with 4:45 left for a 49-44 score. However, both teams went cold until a pair of free throws with 1:55 left gave the Lobos a seven-point lead. That's where Cormier took over, scoring seven straight points to tie the game at 51-51 with less than 45 seconds left. The Lobos answered with a three-pointer on their ensuing possession to reclaim the lead, and then
Maya Washington was fouled with just 2.6 remaining on the clock. Needing three points, and after missing the first free throw attempt, Washington intentionally missed the second and the rebound took a couple of deflections, falling fortunately right into the hands and rhythm of
Christina Canale, whose three-point shot at the buzzer found nothing but twine to force overtime. LC would take the lead on the team's forst possession in overtime on a three by Kinney, but that would be most of the offense for the Wildcats in the extra period, as the who struggled to score in the extra five minutes, leading to defeat.
ZyUnn Cormier led the Wildcats with 20 points while also grabbing six rebounds.
Alex Harrison chipped in 14 points, including a perfect six of six at the free throw line. Louisiana College shot 32.3% in the contest while Sul Ross hit on 34.4% of their attempts.
The Wildcats (2-7, 0-1 ASC) look to rebound on Saturday, closing out their first weekend of conference play on the road against Howard Payne. Tip-off against the Yellow Jackets (5-6, 1-1 ASC) is set for 1:00 P.M. at the Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, Texas.
