Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Fast Start Fizzles in Conference-Opening Loss

Early Lead Doesn't Hold in ASC Opener

ALPINE, Texas – The Louisiana College men's basketball team couldn't have asked for a much better start to its ASC opener against Sul Ross St., jumping out to a quick seven point lead in the opening minutes, but that quick start didn't last and the Wildcats soon found themselves behind in an 85-64 loss to the Lobos Thursday night at the Pete P. Gallego Center.

Jr. G Kae'ron Baker had the offense moving in the opening moments of the game, scoring ten of the Wildcats' first 12 points to help LC jump out to a 12-5 lead just more than 2:30 into the contest. But things quickly turned against LC as the Lobos outscored the Wildcats 34-10 over the next 11 minutes to take a 39-22 lead. LC did have one more punch in them, going on a 13-2 run, including the final ten points in a row, to cut that deficit down to just six points as another jumper by Baker made it 41-35 Sul Ross with 2:30 left before halftime. But that would be as close as LC would get the rest of the way.

Sr. G Denzel Austin led the Wildcats with 17 points. Kae'ron Baker finished the game with 15 points and four assists. Louisiana College finished the game hitting at a 39.3% clip in the contest, while Sul Ross St. hit on 55.2% of their shots.

The Wildcats (6-4, 0-1 ASC) look to get back in the win column on Saturday, looking for a second victory on the season against Howard Payne. LC took down HPU in H.O. West Fieldhouse 79-61 in a game that didn't count towards conference record back on December 9th. Tip-off against the Yellow Jackets (1-10, 0-2 ASC) is set for 3:00 P.M. at the Brownwood Coliseum in Brownwood, Texas.
