Wild Walk-Off Win for Cardiac Cats

In an instant classic, the Louisiana College baseball team kept their hopes of a conference championship alive on Saturday afternoon with a walk-off 13-12 victory over UT Dallas. The Wildcats capitalized on six Comet errors and willed their way to the Blue Bracket Championship on Sunday. LC will face LeTourneau University at 1 p.m. needing two wins over the Yellowjackets to claim a spot in the ASC Championship series next weekend.

The Wildcats jumped on the board early as Clayton Noakes hit a moonshot 3-run home run in the bottom of the first, his ninth of the season, to give LC a 3-0 lead after the first inning of play. The Comets though would respond with a four spot in the top of the second, scoring all four runs with two outs in the inning.

LC would respond in a big way in the bottom of the third. Keelyn Johnson tied the game at four on a bases loaded single to right and chased the UTD starting pitcher. After a strikeout, Dane Pedersen worked the count to 3-and-2 before sending a ball to the opposite field beyond the left field wall for a grand slam that would give LC the 8-4 lead after three innings.

That lead would only last until the top of the fifth as the Comets copied the Wildcats by tying the game on a bases loaded fielder's choice ground ball then hit a 2-out grand slam to retake the lead at 9-8. After a scoreless fifth, the Comets would push their lead to two on back-to-back doubles in the sixth, but the Cats would have an answer in the bottom of the inning.

Christian Vandergrift picked up the first RBI of the inning on a sac fly to shallow center. The Wildcats would then tie the game as Brodie Falgoust scored from second on a throwing error by the third baseman, the second error of the inning for UTD, that extended the inning even further. The Cats would make UTD pay even more after two straight singles loaded the bases, Deauton Delgado took the first pitch he saw off the jersey to pick and RBI and give the Cats the 11-10 lead.

The Comets would retake the lead once again in the eighth inning after tying it on a base hit up the middle and a 2-out double to left. The Wildcats would not go down without a fight. After fourth error by the UTD third baseman that allowed Noakes to reach base with 2-out, Johnson drove a ball to deep right center for a triple that would tie the game at 12 and give LC all the momentum heading to the ninth.

The seventh pitcher of the game for LC, Konner McDermott, came on to start the inning getting a ground ball to third for the first out but surrendering two baserunners on a walk and a base hit. Once again the LC defense stepped up and the infield combo of Brady Atkins, Keelyn Johnson, and Dane Pedersen ended the inning with a double play, the fifth in two games, to retired the side.

Back-to-back singles to start the inning by Pedersen and Hunter Bower put the winning run at second base. After another Comet error on a bunt by Brodie Falgoust, the Cats had the bases loaded, no one out, and the top of the lineup coming to the plate. The Wildcats wouldn't need to put a bat on the ball as a wild pitch during Brady Atkins' at-bat allowed Pedersen to race down the line and slide in under the tag at the plate to end the one-of-a-kind contest.

The Wildcats will advance to the bracket championship and have to win two games over LeTourneau on Sunday to claim a spot in the ASC championship series next weekend. First-pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Foster Field in San Angelo, Texas with the second game set for 30 minutes following the first.
