Baseball Wins 15-Inning Epic Over #11 Concordia

Louisiana College baseball opened their three game series with #11 ranked Concordia (Texas) on Friday night with an epic 15-inning affair that would end in a Wildcat walk-off victory. After seeing multiple game winning situations go by the wayside, the Cats would load the bases in the 15thand get a bouncing ball to short that allowed the winning run to score and give the Cats the 5-4 win over the Tornado.

Concordia would get on the board first on a 2-out, RBI double to left to take the early 1-0 lead. They would make it 3-0 two innings later on a base hit to left and infield single both coming with 2-out in the inning.

A pair of doubles in the bottom of the fourth would get the Wildcats on the board as Dane Pedersen would plate Keelyn Johnson, who's two-bagger started the inning. The Wildcats next major scoring threat would come in the seventh innings as LC loaded the bases with no outs. A fielder's choice groundball from Christian Vandergrift would make it a 3-2 ball game, but that would be the only run for LC in the frame as the next two batters struck out and grounded out, limiting the potential damage.

The Cats would get the tying run to third in the eighth but would come up empty, an unfortunate theme for the Wildcats over the next several innings. Still down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Brady Atkins would lead off the inning with a base hit and move to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later the game was tied as Clayton Noakes' RBI single scored Atkins on a bang-bang play at the plate, and put the winning run on base. A single to right moved the run to second, but he would stay there as the next batter would strikeout to end the inning and send the game to extra innings.

With the pressure turned up after nine-innings of play, it would be a matter of which team would blink first. The first chance for the Wildcats to win the game came in the 11thwith Vandergrift hitting a double to right center then stealing third with only one away. Back-to-back strikeouts would leave the game-winner standing at third and extend the game for at least another inning.

The Wildcats left the winning run at second in the 12thand yet another scoring opportunity that they missed and Concordia would make them pay for. In the 13th, after two easy ground outs to short, Brett Leiferman would hit a solo home run to put the Tornado up 4-3.

Blaine Ouber would lead off the bottom of the inning with a double down the left field line and pinch runner Jacob Fowler would move to third on a wild pitch. After a ground out to third held the tying run at third, Vandergrift would single to right to tie the game at four. He would then advance to second on an error, and third on a steal, putting the winning run 90-feet away once again. On a pop up to first that created a tough catch for the first baseman, Vandergrift tried to tag and score but was thrown out at the plate to send the game to the 14th.

The Wildcats would turn a huge double play in the top of the inning after Concordia had runners at the corners with one out. On a bouncer to first, the tag was applied and the throw to the plate was perfect to the get the runner and end the inning. Neither team would threaten in the bottom of the 14thor the top of the 15th, but the Wildcats had designs of ending the game in the bottom of the 15th.

Ashton Martin led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Peyton Bogan reached on a fielder's choice with Martin advancing to third with an evasive slide into the bag. After a strategic intentional walk to create a force at any base, Christian Vandergrift walked to the plate with the bases loaded. He would punch a ball back up the middle into the drawn-in infield with the shortstop fielding the ball running to his left with no play on the runner coming home sending the Wildcat bench into delirium and the home fans out happy with a 5-4 LC victory.

The Wildcats used 24 position players in the game but only three pitchers as Phillip Vidrine threw six innings in relief giving up just one run and three hits to get the win.

The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12pm Saturday at Billy Allgood Field. Stay connected to Louisiana College baseball by following @LC_bsb on Twitter. For general athletics news follow @LC_Wildcats on Twitter or like Louisiana College Wildcats on Facebook.
