Cats Complete Sweep of #11 Concordia

Following the historic win over #11 Concordia (Texas) in the first game of the day, the Louisiana College baseball team had designs on completing their second straight conference series sweep. The Wildcats, riding the high of Delgado's no-hitter to start the day, got on the board early and held on for the 4-3 win, sweeping the Tornado on the weekend for their sixth straight conference win.

The Wildcats got on the board in the bottom of the first with a first and third situation and no one out. Concordia would concede the run from third on a ground ball double play, but the run scored by Brady Atkins would prove to be a big one with Andrew Robinson on the mound for the Wildcats.

Robinson, coming off his nine inning complete game shutout of Belhaven last Saturday, made his fourth straight quality start for the Wildcats. While Concordia would have at least one hit and have runners reach second or third in each of the first four innings, they would have no runs to show for their effort. Robbie would work around the potential danger with key strikeouts and easy final outs to skirt the danger.

The Wildcats 1-0 lead would hold through five innings, when the Wildcats would add some much needed insurance in the way of a 2-out single from Keelyn Johnson that made it 2-0 after six innings. After a 1-2-3 inning from Robinson in the top of the seventh, the Wildcats would double their lead in the bottom of the inning.

A 1-out double from Dylan Keller put him in scoring position and pinch runner Tyrese Morgan would come around on the ensuing RBI single by Ty Morgan. Atkins would bring the second Morgan in to score of the inning three batters later on a base hit to center, making it 4-0 Wildcats.

The two extra runs were huge for the Wildcats, as Concordia pushed across three runs in the top of the eighth on three singles in the inning. Robinson would get the final out of the inning with the tying run at third to preserve the lead and keep himself in line for the win.

The Wildcats had a chance to get some insurance in the bottom of the inning but an inning ending 1-6-3 double play thwarted the attempt to add to the lead. Chevy Emken was called on to try and finish the win in the ninth, and after a leadoff walk put the tying run on base, got a fly ball out to left, and a key caught stealing  at second before getting the final pop up to short to end the game and give LC the sweep.

The win would be the Wildcats' 13thin a row, extending the new program record for longest winning streak. They will host Champion Christian for a single game on Monday afternoon next week at 1pm at Billy Allgood Field. Stay connected to Louisiana College baseball by following @LC_bsb on Twitter.
