Roberts Era Begins with Two Wins

The 2019 season started off with a bang for the Louisiana College softball team and first-year head coach Barry Roberts on Friday night. The Wildcats picked up two very different, but exciting wins over Schreiner University with 8-2 and 17-9 final scores. LC pounded out a total of 31 hits and took advantage of nine Mountaineers errors over the two games.

Game 1

After a quick 1-2-3 inning from freshman Sarah Gartman, making her first collegiate start in the season opener, the Wildcats took advantage of the first SU error of the game, when Abby Sterling scored on a throwing error in the first to take the early 1-0 lead. The Cats got another run, thanks to yet another error, in the second when Alyssa Ross came in on a Shelby Bergeron bunt.

Schreiner cut the Wildcat lead in half with a leadoff solo homerun in the third, but Gartman wasn't rattled, retiring nine of the next 11 batters she would face. Still holding the 2-1 lead going to the bottom of the fifth, the Wildcat offense would finally break through with multiple clutch hits. A double from Sterling plated Bergeron, which was followed immediately by freshman Jade Brady's opposite field homerun making it 5-1 in favor of the Wildcats. Another extra base hit, this time a double from Shaye Tredinich plated the sixth run of the game two batters later.

The Wildcats added two more runs in the sixth as Brady ripped a pitched right back through the box to bring in her third and fourth runners of the game. LC had a chance to end the game via the run rule later in the inning but a double play ended the bases loaded threat and sent the game the full seven.

Gartman earned her first win as a Wildcat going 6.0 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Bergeron went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of steals and Brady's two hits resulted in four RBIs in the game.

Game 2

Despite the ever-dropping temperature as the second game of the day crept along, the bats provided plenty of heat, for both teams. A combined 26 runs and 31 hits provided plenty of offense and excitement for the cold home crowd.

Schreiner struck first in game two, thanks to an LC error, but the lead only lasted until the bottom of the inning as, yet again, Jade Brady came through with a 2-run single through the right side plating Sterling and Briley Johnston to put the Cats on top. She would come around to score three batters later on a Ross base hit, making it 3-1 Wildcats after one.

A Sterling sacrifice fly in the second made it 4-1 but the first crocked number against the Wildcats would come in the third. Six runs on seven hits, including back-to-back doubles and a trip through the lineup made it 7-4 Schreiner. Once again though, the lead would not stay with the visitors long. After loading the bases with 1-out, Bergeron lifted a ball just beyond the left fielder, plating all three runners, then a throwing error skipped into the outfield allowing her to race in for the fourth run of the play, putting the Wildcats back on top with one swing of the bat.

A 2-run homer though from SU put them back up three batters into the fourth, 9-8, but yet again LC would answer. A nifty slide by Brady on a bunt from Sami Walters tied the game at nine after four innings.

The Wildcats would break things open even further in the fifth with four 2-out hits after scoring the first two runs of the frame on another Sterling double, and Kaitlyn Moore sac fly. An error allowed two more to score and Tredinich capped the scoring with a no-doubter home run over the left field wall to make it 16-9 after five. LC would end things in six via the run-rule with Brady's seventh RBI of the day to bring Johnston in for the walk-off win.

The Wildcats take on Millsaps College Saturday afternoon in another doubleheader. First-pitch for game one is set for 2 p.m. at Wildcat Park.
