Wildcats Fall to Late-Inning Rally

The 2019 Louisiana College baseball season began on Monday night with a short trip North to take on in-state rival Centenary College. A team effort pitching dual turned sideways late as the Gents put up five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the season opener 6-2 over the Wildcats. LC plays their home opener this weekend with a doubleheader Friday afternoon against Champion Christian College at Billy Allgood Field.

With only three combined hits through the first four and a half innings, the bats were taking their time getting the season going. In the bottom of the fifth, Centenary would take advantage of a Wildcat throwing error with 2-out that allowed a runner to advance to scoring position and come home on a base hit down the right field line to make the score 1-0 Gents.

The Wildcats would threaten to tie the game in the top of each of the next two innings, thanks to some disciplined at-bats, drawing three walks, and a pair of steals to second. Unfortunately neither time the key hit would be delivered as LC left runners stranded in scoring position keeping it a 1-0 game going to the eighth.

With already one run in and runners at first and second a ringing triple to right center plated two more runs, making it 4-0. A pair of RBI singles from the next two batters made it a 6-0 game in the blink of an eye, each of the last four runs coming with two gone in the inning.

The Wildcats were able to find some offense in the ninth as Cullen Guerriero's pinch-hit single plated Clayton Noakes for the first run of the year for LC. Hunter Bower added another on a sacrifice fly but the margin was too great this time for a dramatic ninth inning comeback.

The Wildcats open the 2019 season at The Billy on Friday afternoon against first-year program Champions Christian from Hot Springs, Ark. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m. Stay connected to Louisiana College baseball by following @LC_bsb on Twitter.
