Lady Wildcats Lose Pair in Sherman

After unfortunate circumstances forced the Louisiana College volleyball team to push their season opening matches to the first day of September, the Wildcats dropped both their contests on Saturday in straight sets. The Wildcats will head to Jackson, Miss next week for another scheduled four game set in the Millsaps Invitational.

Schreiner vs Louisiana College

If the first set of the opening match of the year is any indication of what the 2018 season will hold, it proves to be an exciting year for the Wildcats. The teams truly went back and forth throughout the set with neither putting together more than three consecutive points at a time, save for a small four-point swing by Schreiner midway through the affair. The Wildcats took a 15-14 lead after the run with an ace from freshman Cabree Bourg and a kill from sophomore Sadi Jones. The teams continued to battle the rest of the way with LC coming within a single point of winning the opening set at 25-24, but a Wildcat attack error and a kill from Schreiner gave them the advantage back and they would finish the first set with a 28-26 win.

The second frame was not at competitive as the Wildcats committed 14 errors in the set including eight attack errors and five service errors in the total. Schreiner took the second with a 25-10 score. The Wildcats responded well after the tough second with a much better effort in the third. After falling behind 6-2, LC worked their way back the get within one point on three different occasions, the latest coming with at the 19-18 mark following a Schreiner attack error. Four straight points by SU that included three more LC errors pushed their lead to 23-18 just that quickly and they were eventually able to secure the straight set win 25-22.

Sophomore Jaslyn Bright led all players with 12 kills, the only one in double figures in the match, followed by eight from Jones and six from Niajia Huval. Paris Babino led all players with 30 assists and Olivia Huval led everyone with 26 digs.

Louisiana College vs Austin College

After a closely contested early portion of the first set with LC behind just 9-7, a 5-0 run by Austin College put the first set in their control as they pushed their lead to seven at 14-7. The scored nine of the next 10 total points and held a 10-point advantage late in the set. Facing set point the Wildcats rallied for five late points to gain some momentum behind a pair of aces from freshman I'Nyah Kately and a kill from Niajia Huval, but the Roos would eventually take the opener 25-15.

Tied at four in the second set, it was another long run by Austin that gave them some breathing room, and created just enough space between them and the Wildcats to take the 2-0 match lead. LC battled to within three later in the set on an ace and a kill from Jaslyn Bright but Austin scored four of the next five points and took the second 25-20 over the Wildcats.

In what turned out to be the final set of the night, the teams combined for four straight three-point swings that made the score 15-11 in favor of the home Roos. After a kill from Mary Nichols appeared to start the Wildcats next three-point swing, Austin College would put an abrupt end to the attempt with six straight points and nine of 10 in their favor to reach match point at 24-13. They would finish the match off just a few plays later with a kill.

Niajia Huval and Jaslyn Bright each had eight kills for the Wildcats in the match with Mary Nichols adding six of her own. Paris Babino added 25 more assists and both Olivia Huval and Cabree Bourg finished with double digit digs with 14 and 12 respectively.

The Wildcats will travel to Millsaps next week for a four match weekend that begins on Friday afternoon at 3pm as they take on the host Millsaps and follow that with a match against LaGrange College. LC will take on Dillard and Rust to close out the weekend on Saturday. Stay connected to Louisiana College women's volleyball by following @LC_wvolleyball on Twitter.
