Late Push Ends Early for Wildcats

Despite playing even with the top team in the American Southwest Conference East standings for the entire second half, the Louisiana College men's basketball team could not overcome their first half follies, falling 95-75 to LeTourneau University on Thursday night. The Wildcats end their week with a visit from rival East Texas Baptist Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

The Wildcats battled their way to an early 7-4 lead on LeTourneau through the first four minutes of the game, but a quick 7-0 burst by the Yellowjackets put them in the lead by the first media timeout. A pair of layups from Wildcat big man Devon Washington later in the half tied the game at 13, but LETU scored 14 straight to follow that to go up by that number by the halfway point of the first.

LeTourneau maintained their offense and solid shooting, better than 50 percent, for the rest of the first half, keeping the double digit lead on the Wildcats in tact.

Down by 17 with 6:18 left in the game, the Wildcats made a huge push to get back within striking distance of the Jackets. Six quick points on three straight possessions cut the lead down to 11, then a 3-pointer and layup from Lashard Powell after a LETU field goal got the margin to single digits at 79-71 with 3:53 remaining. The run would end there though for the Wildcats as over the final 3:30, after the final media timeout, the Yellowjackets outscored LC 14-4 to take the 95-75 win.

Devon Washington led all scorers with 25 points, adding 14 rebounds to the effort, for his second double-double in the last three games and third straight game scoring 25 or more points. Jaquez Coleman added 16 points while Lashard Powell finished with 12 and Timothy Stokes with 11 in the game.

The Wildcats finish their three game American Southwest Conference schedule this week on Saturday against ETBU Tigers at H.O. West Fieldhouse.
