Wildcats Find Gold in West Texas

After another slightly slow start to the game, the Louisiana College women were able to repeat the performance from Thursday's win to sweep this road trip with a 70-65 win over Sul Ross State University on Saturday afternoon. Jaleya Gold's 20-point performance in the paint gave the Wildcats the edge they needed to improve to 6-2 on the season and 3-1 in American Southwest Conference play.

In a similar story line to Thursday's win over Howard Payne, the Wildcats found themselves trailing 10-2 at the midway point of the first quarter and struggling to find their shooting touch. With shots not falling from the outside, the Wildcats turned to the post presence of transfer Jaleya Gold who brought the score back within reach with six straight points making it a 12-8 game with less than three minutes to go. The spark lifted the rest of the offense and a Chelsea Singleton jumper at the end of the first made it a 14-13 game.

With the momentum on their side heading into the second the play of the guard began to match the inside play of Gold and Alexis Lege. LC took their first lead of the game on a layup from Kourtney McGhee with 2:29 left I the half at 29-27. Gold capped of a dominant first half with another easy bucket with two second to go, giving her 16 in the first half and the Wildcats a 38-33 lead.

With the offense clicking, the defense helped LC create some space in the third quarter. They held the Lobos to just six third quarter points on 2-of-19 shooting from the floor. Combined with the 7-for-16 effort from the Wildcat offense, LC stretched their lead to 18 by the end of the quarter as RyDeja McQuarn caught and inbound pass and knocked down a three from the corner at the end of the third.

Tachiana Ledet opened the fourth with a three of her own to give the Wildcats their largest lead of the game at 60-39 just nine seconds into the final quarter. Despite the big lead, the game was far from over as the Lobos climbed back into the game thanks to a 22-6 run that ate up much of the fourth quarter. Fortunately for the Wildcats they were able to make enough shots down the stretch to escape the furious Lobo comeback.

Gold had by far her best performance of the season with 20 total points in just 14 minutes of game time on 8-of-12 shooting, the only Wildcat earning double-figures in the game. LC is one win away from matching their best start to a season since the 2014-15 campaign and will have the chance to do that after Christmas in the Trinity (TX) University Tournament in San Antonio, Texas.

The Wildcats play in an exhibition at McNeese State next Wednesday. Their next ASC game will come on January 3 as they take on Concordia at H.O. West Fieldhouse in the home opener.
