The Louisiana College Wildcats clashed with ASC opponent McMurry Univ. War Hawks Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Stadium.
After a weather delay, the Wildcats win 1-0 with
Ian Carter's scoring in the 85th minute.
The Wildcats' offense was clicking from the beginning, outshooting the War Hawks 16-12 and controlling the midfield.
The Cats were shooting from all distances but could not beat War Hawk keeper Aidan Keane.
In the 52nd minute, the Cats nearly took the lead after Keane saved
Gabriel G. Lopes' shot and then fell into the path of
Leo Urumovski, but Urumovski could not keep his shot low and on target. The War Hawk dodged a bullet and were still in the game.
As the game progressed the LC chances were limited, the Cats were held to shots outside the 18-yard box as McMurry pressed higher.
The Wildcat defense controlled the War Hawks offense allowing shots, but only one found
Evan Barker, who dealt with the header comfortably.
The dominant defense gave the midfield plenty of space to operate, creating one-two passes and counterattacks. Working the ball along LC's left side in the 85th minute,
Ian Carter used the slick turf to place his shot perfectly through traffic and into the bottom far post corner, eliminating Keane from saving it.
The War Hawks threw everything they could in the final minutes hoping for an equalizer and overtime, at one point sending the keeper to half-field on a free-kick. The Cat stood tall and defended bravely at every test, clearing any loose ball and keeping the Hawks at bay.
The Cats held on long enough and secured their second ASC victory on the season and moved above Sul Ross State Univ. The Cats will face the Lobos of Sul Ross next Thursday in Alpine, TX. for a crucial bottom table matchup.
