Wildcats Win Season Opener

The Louisiana College Wildcats picked up their first win of the regular season Saturday against Millsaps College by a comfortable 20-point margin over the Majors, 70-50.  The Wildcats had three players score in double figures with sophomore John Parker picking up his first double-double of the season.  LC will take on Rhodes College Sunday afternoon at 2pm from Memphis in their next outing.

The Wildcats started off strong in the first half taking the first lead of the game on a layup by Brandon Watkins for the 2-0 lead.  From that point forward it would be LC's game through the first 13 minutes of the half.  With the score tied at seven with just under 12 minutes left in the half to Wildcats would go on a 15-2 run to take a commanding 22-9 lead with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Majors would make a run of their own to finish the half and bring the game within two points but the Wildcats still held the lead at 29-27 after the first half.

A quick bucket by the Majors to start the second half tied the game at 29, but just as they did in the first half, the Wildcats would regain control from the Majors. The Wildcats scored the next nine points of the half to take a 38-29 lead, four of the nine points coming from senior Raheem Regis in his first action of the season in this game. LC built to a 20 point lead with a layup by Timothy Stokes at the 3:11 mark of the half and kept the pressure on from there maintining the lead the remainder of the game.

LC had three players score in double figures in the game, John Parker led all scorers with 16 points, and added 14 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.  Kevin Cottonham and Raheem Regis both finished with 13 points a piece and Steve Evans had double digit rebounds with 12.  As a team the Wildcats shot 39.7% from the field but 73.7% from the free throw line, and out rebounded Millsaps 50-28 in the game.
LC will take on Rhodes College Sunday at 2pm before the Wildcats head for Abeline, Texas and their first conference games of the season next weekend against McMurry and Hardin-Simmons.
