Chenevert's nearly perfect stat line powers LC over MC

Box Score

It is a rare occasion indeed when LC Women's Basketball coach Jason Tinsley finds nothing wrong in his team's performance, but Tuesday's 92-37 victory over Mississippi College proved to be just that.??

“That's probably the most complete game we've played so far,” Tinsley said. “There weren't many things to get on them about. Our intensity was great.”??

That intensity saw the Lady Cats jump out to a 16-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Leading the way was forward Skylar Chenevert who scored 10 of the team's first 16 points – including two three-point baskets – on her way to a 29-point night to lead all scorers. It was the fourth straight game the sophomore from Plainview High School hit double figures in a performance that included 10-of-15 from the floor, 7-of-10 from three-point range, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

“Skylar played about as good a game as you can play,” Tinsley said. “You take away her seven turnovers, and that was a heck of a stat line.” ??

“Yeah, Coach was reading my stat line and said everything was good except for the turnovers,” Chenevert said. “My teammates were really pumping my head, and that gave me a lot of confidence on the bench.” ??

Asked if she had ever had a game like that, Chenevert said, “Never.” ??

Chenevert finished the first half with 14 points as the Lady Wildcats build a 49-20 lead at the break and never looked back. ??
Making that effort even more impressive was the fact that LC's leading scorer, senior Natosha Gottlieb, spent all but seven minutes on the bench in the first half in foul trouble. The Wildcats forced the Lady Choctaws into 25 first-half turnovers and out-rebounded MC 25-16 in the first half. ??

“That means our girls are maturing,” Tinsley said. “Going forward, that's huge if they know that they can play without Tosh on the floor.” ??

“It was different,” Gottlieb said of her view from the sidelines. “But, it makes you happy at the same time – no one on this team is irreplaceable.”??

“We could be…” she added. “We could be really good.” ??

Despite her foul trouble, Gottlieb did finish with 15 points and six rebounds. Also hitting double figures for LC were Keana Frank with 13 points and four steals and Kala Chenier with 12 points and three rebounds. Danisha Allison also contributed seven points and 11 rebounds. ??

MC failed to get a single player in double figures as the Lady Choctaws shot just 34-percent (13-for-38) from the floor and finished with 45 turnovers. LC, which out-rebounded MC 49-31, hit 29-of-77 shots for 37-percent including an impressive 17-of-41 from three-point range. ??

The Lady Wildcats improve to 12-1 on the season and 8-0 in the American Southwest Conference. MC fell to 8-6 overall, 5-3 in the ASC. ??

Up next for LC is a trip to Longview, Texas for an ASC matchup with LeTourneau on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
