PINEVILLE, La. – The Louisiana College men made the most of their 2012 Senior Day, overcoming a 14-point deficit to defeat Centenary Saturday.
Coach
Gene Rushing, who has been away from the team since being hospitalized with a hernia last weekend, was in attendance for the game but did not coach. Athletic Director Darrell Payne remained the acting coach for the contest.
LC (9-11) trailed fell behind 19-5 by 15:42 mark of the first half but rebounded to pull within five of Centenary (11-11) at the break.
The Wildcats went on to outscore the Gents 45-35 in the second half and capped a hard-fought win with a crowd-thrilling alley-oop dunk by
Edward Atkins (Lecompte, La./Rapides HS) off a pass from
Doc Welch (Alexandria, La./Tioga HS) with just one second on the game clock.
Although the big offensive stars of the game were Centenary's Maxx Nakwaasah with 30 points and nine rebounds and Jonathan Blount with 24 points and six rebounds, it was a balanced attack from the Wildcats that proved the difference.
Welch finished with 15 to lead the LC scoring attack but senior point guard
Jelani Mitchell (St. Martinville, La./St. Martinville HS) filled up the scoring sheet more efficiently, posting a 12-point, 10-assist double-double to go along with six rebounds.
Atkins added 13 points and nine rebounds while junior post
Derrick Gardner (St. Martinville, La./St. Martinville HS) scored seven points, pulled six rebounds and blocked seven shots.
LC, which has already clinched a berth in the American Southwest Conference tournament, will close its regular season on Monday with a home contest against rival Mississippi College.
