SAN ANTONIO – The Louisiana Christian University women's soccer team held off a furious rally in the final 10 minutes by Texas A&M-San Antonio after going down a man, holding off the Jaguars for a 2-1 win Saturday at the TAMUSA Soccer Field.
Louisiana Christian (6-2-1, 3-0 RRAC) generated an 8-4 shot advantage in a scoreless first half.
Katalina Medina put four attempts on goal before halftime, including one saved in the 33
rd minute. At the other end,
Marta Papandrea got some help from her teammates as LCU was credited with three saves during the first 45 minutes.
Medina broke through shortly after halftime, scoring an unassisted goal. Laing added another in the 77
th minute, converting her only shot of the match to give LCU a 2-0 advantage. Neither Wildcats goal carried an assist.
The lead narrowed when Texas A&M-San Antonio (2-7-1, 0-3 RRAC) converted a penalty kick in the 80
th minute. Things got even more bleak for LCU's effort to hold the lead when the Wildcats were shown a red card and were forced to play the final six-plus minutes of the contest down a player, but LCU held on without conceding again.
Medina led the Wildcats with seven shots, five on goal, while
Izzy Childs supplied five attempts, including two on target.
Giovanna Rocha and
Emerith Hernandez each put their lone attempt on goal, and
Yvie Miller added one shot. LCU finished with advantages of 16-9 in shots, 10-8 in shots on goal and 5-4 in corner kicks.
Papandrea completed all 90 minutes with six saves, with the additional team save bringing LCU's total to seven. Medina sent the match's final recorded shot wide left in the 89
th minute as the Wildcats remained perfect in conference play.
The Wildcats return to action on Monday, making up the match delayed by weather from Thursday against Our Lady of the Lake. Kickoff of Monday's contest against the Saints (4-2-2, 2-0 RRAC) is set for 11 a.m. at the OLLU Soccer Field.
