(RV) Wildcats Hold Off Blazers to Open 2022 with Win

Magleau Tallies a Goal & Two Assists to Lead LCU Offense

PINEVILLE, La. – The (RV) Louisiana Christian University women's soccer team had to hold off a furious rally by Belhaven in the match's final 12 minutes to make a three-goal lead stand up for a 4-3 win over the Blazers Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field.

The scoring got started in the 20th minute as, following a foul by the Blazers, Emma Monnet stepped into a free kick near the center line. The ball sailed into the offensive half and Laura Magleau got on the end of it, allowed an onrushing Blazer defender to fly past her, and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to put the Wildcats ahead to stay.

Shortly after that goal, weather moved in and delayed the match by nearly an hour and a half. But just about nine minutes after play resumed, the script flipped from the first goal to put the Wildcats up two. In the 31st minute, Laura Magleau lifted a ball over the top of the defense and Emma Monnet got on the end of it, attacked the goal and beat the keeper to give LCU a 2-0 lead. That's the way the two teams would go into the halftime break.

Belhaven tried to work its way back into the match early in the second half as a loose ball off a Blazer corner was headed inside the left post to make it 2-1 LCU in the 51st minute. However, it took just ten minutes to get that goal back thanks to a Blazer mistake. After a Blazer defender failed to corral an errant pass from one of her backline partners, Alexa Midkiff jumped on the loose ball and buried her first collegiate goal to give LCU a 3-1 lead in the 61st minute.

Nine minutes after that, the lead extended out to three goals as Laura Magleau attacked down the right side and sent a cross back towards the top of the box where Jazmine Jamison was waiting, and Jamison launched a shot which the Blazer keeper had no chance to stop in the top right-corner of the goal for a 4-1 Wildcat lead with just more than 20 minutes left in the contest.

However, Belhaven didn't just accept the defeat, scoring goals in the 80th and 85th minutes to suddenly making the final five minutes of the match very interesting. The Blazers got one good look to potentially tie the match in the 89th minute, but the shot sailed just wide right and LCU was able to run out the remainder of the clock to preserve the win.

Emma Monnet, Laura Magleau, Jazmine Jamison, and Alexa Midkiff all scored their first goals of 2022 in the match while Magleau added two assists to her tally and Monnet picked up a helper as well. Midkiff led the team in shots with four on the day, putting all four on target, including her goal. The Wildcats put up an impressive 11 shots on goal out of the 14 total shots the team took in the contest.

Jessica Carro Pedreira (1-0) played the entirety of the first half and was credited with five saves as she kept the Blazers off the board during her time in net. Bailey Danton took her place in net to start the second half and she saved two of the three Blazer shots on target she faced during her 33-plus minutes in net. Jaycee Woods was the final keeper used in the match by LCU, picking up a save as three Belhaven shots were put on target during her 11 minutes in net to close out the match. All told, Belhaven took 18 shots in the match, 14 of which were on frame.

The (RV) Wildcats (1-0) look to make it an undefeated weekend on Sunday as Lyon College comes to town. Kickoff of Sunday's match against the Scots (0-0) is set for 3:00 P.M. at Wildcat Field.
