Last weekend in Boca Raton, Fla., former Louisiana College wide receiver Darnell Williams, an NFL hopeful in 2012 having completed his college career in the fall of 2011, got the chance to showcase his abilities in front of quite the audience.

Williams, who played his high school ball in Winter Park, Fla., was invited to participate in the Battle of Florida All-Star game, a game in which he was one of just a few non-NCAA Division I participants. Most of the participants represented SEC and other power-conference schools.

It was a game that featured two legends – Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden coached the North Florida All-Stars and former Miami and Florida Atlantic coach Howard Schnellenberger coached the South Florida All-Stars – and 100 players, all of who are draft eligible this Spring and hold a connection, either by birth or playing career, to the state of Florida.

The North, for who Williams played, routed the South 51-3 thanks to a combined 262 yards and three touchdowns passing from former South Carolina quarterback Steven Garcia, East Carolina's Dominique Davis and Jacksonville's Josh McGregor.

Williams' impact on the stat sheet was limited to one catch for five yards, but he made the most of his opportunity, blocking with intensity for a North rushing attack that went for 236 yards and three scores.

Even his one catch turned out to be a highlight as, with Davis scrambling, Williams maintained discipline and floated ran to an open spot along the sideline before making a diving grab and getting two feet in-bounds.

Not a bad showing when one has the opportunity to be seen by 140 scouts — including 29 from NFL teams, four from Canadian Football League teams and one Arena League team.
