RICHARDSON, Texas –– Louisiana College junior second baseman
Jordan Marks and freshman right-hander
Cole Prejean, junior utility player/catcher Collin Janssen and sophomore right-hander Colin Butschek of Concordia Texas, and senior right-hander Chad Sherman of Texas-Tyler all earned top individual honors to highlight the 2011 American Southwest Conference baseball awards, following a division-only vote by head coaches.
Marks (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard/ LSU-Alexandria) was named East Division Player of the Year after batting .340 with 10 home runs and a conference-high 55 RBIs. The 5-9, 175-pound infielder also totaled 12 doubles, one triple, 33 walks and scored 46 times. He committed just two errors and led the Wildcats to the ASC tournament.
Prejean (Brusly, La./Brusly HS), who went 8-2 on the mound, was named 2011 East Freshman of the Year and became the third Wildcat in the last five years to earn that honor, shortstop
Steven Davis(Monroe, La./Ouachita HS) having won the award in 2007 and designated hitter
Anthony Benoit (Lafayette, La./St. Michael's HS) the same in 2008.
For the second straight year, Louisiana College's coaches, head coach
Mike Byrnes and assistants
Matt Byrnes, James Halle and
Andrew Shelton, were named East Coaching Staff of the Year, the voting having resulted in a three-way tie among LC, Texas-Tyler and LeTourneau.
On the All ASC East Team, eight Wildcats were listed.
Marks and Benoit were joined by senior catcher
Chris Waguespack (Destrehan, La./St. Charles) and junior right-hander
Josh Foster (Houma, La./Winnfield HS) on the first team.
Prejean and senior center fielder
Cody Laprarie (Bentley, La./Grant HS/LSU-Alexandria) were second-team selections while Davis and sophomore first baseman
Mike Doughty (Crowley, La./Crowley HS/LSU-Eunice) earned honorable mention.
Janssen (Bryan, Texas /Temple College) was named West Division Player of the Year after batting .373 with one home run, one triple, 11 doubles and 25 RBIs. The 6-4, 220-pound backstop also threw out a league-high 15 would-be base stealers, scored 31 runs and walked 21 times. In addition, he went 2-1 on the mound.
Butschek (Lake Travis, Texas / LTHS) was named West Division Pitcher of the Year after going 8-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 60 strikeouts. The 6-3, 165-pound righty walked just 15 batters over 88 2/3 innings of work and his win total was best in the division.
Janssen and Butchek led Concordia Texas to conference and division titles.
Sherman (Bullard, Texas /Texas A&M) was named East Division Pitcher of the Year after going 8-1 with a league-low 1.49 ERA. The 6-5, 205-pound right-handed transfer was also tops in the conference by striking out 95 batters over 72 2/3 innings of work. He hurled three complete-game shutouts and fueled a division crown.
All four were first team selections in their respective divisions.
Other West Division award winners were Hardin-Simmons junior right-hander James Simmons (Abilene, Texas /Cisco), who was named newcomer of the year after going 7-3 with seven saves. HSU catcher Cody Jarboe (Houston, Texas /Spring Woods HS) batted .343 and was named freshman of the year. Mary Hardin-Baylor junior third baseman Josh Frederick (Troy, Texas /THS) was voted the division's sportsmanship athlete of the year.
Other East Division award winner were LeTourneau left-handed pitcher/first baseman Garrett Methvin (Longview, Texas / Arkansas), who was tabbed newcomer of the year after posting a 2.40 ERA on the mound and a .372 batting average at the plate, and East Texas Baptist University senior first baseman Ryan Yezak (Snook, TX / Brazos Christian HS), who was voted the division's sportsmanship athlete of the year for the second straight year.
Hardin-Simmons (Steve Coleman, Brad Holcomb) earned the West Division coaching staff of the year.
