VanGessel again named ASC East Pitcher of the Week

PINEVILLE - For the second time this season Louisiana College freshman left-hander Anthony VanGessel (Tioga, La./Tioga High) has been named the American Southwest Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week.

Last week, with the Wildcats facing a must-win series, VanGessel set the stage for a three-game sweep of Texas-Dallas by tossing a complete-game shutout. Vangessel, who takes the division's top weekly pitching award for the second time this season, scattered seven hits and struck out one batter over the seven frames. He issued only two walks.

The ASC East Hitter of the week was East Texas Baptist junior infielder Luke Leftwich (Mt. Pleasant, TX / Chapel Hill HS), closed out his career by going 9-for-14 with four home runs, one triple, one double and 12 RBIs to pace a 3-1 week. Leftwich, who takes the division's top weekly hitting award for the second time this season, also walked three times and scored eight runs.

In the West Division, the Hitter of the Week was Hardin-Simmons senior catcher/designated hitter Regan Dixon (Arlington, TX / Lamar HS), who went 11-for-18 with two home runs, a triple, three doubles and 11 RBIs over four games. Dixon , who takes the division's top weekly hitting award for the second time this season, also walked twice and scored five runs. He became HSU's all-time leader in home runs with 33.

The ASC West Pitcher of the Week was Mary Hardin-Baylor junior right-hander Jared Hopper (Kingwood, TX / Northeast Christian HS), who picked up his first save in an ASC tournament-clinching win over Sul Ross State, then came back the next day with a complete-game, six-hit shutout. Hopper struck out three batters over a combined 7 2/3 innings of work.

OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES:

HITTERS: Mississippi College OF Bo Bell went 10-for-17 with two homers, two doubles and eight RBIs over a 4-0 week. . . . Louisiana College 2B/SS Jonathan Ettinger went 8-for-14 with three doubles over a 4-0 week. . . . Ozarks's Cory Briggs collected his 200th career hit in a series with ETBU. . . . Howard Payne 2B Kyle Lloyd closed out his career by going 8-for-13 with a triple and 10 RBIs over a series win against Schreiner. . . . McMurry 2B Greg Guse went 9-for-15 with five doubles and a homer over four games. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor 3B Josh Frederick went 5-for-11 with a triple over three games. . . . Concordia Texas OF Pedro Maldonado went 5-for-11 with a homer over three games. . . . Texas Lutheran 1B Clay Childress went 4-for-11 with two doubles and five RBIs over a series sweep against CTX.

PITCHERS: Texas-Tyler RHP Matt Schimpf tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball in relief to get the win against Jarvis Christian. . . . East Texas Baptist RHP Chance Cotton went 2-0 out of the bullpen and posted 11 strikeouts over 11 innings of work. . . . Mississippi College RHP Chris Ferriss compiled 12 strikeouts over 12 innings of work than spanned two appearances. . . . Ozarks RHP Bill Smith set a single-season school record for appearances (22) in a series with ETBU. . . . McMurry RHP Dakota Smith tossed a complete-game, five-hitter to earn the win over Hardin-Simmons that forced a deciding Game 3. . . . . Hardin-Simmons LHP Zach Stephens picked up a save against McMurry by throwing four innings of shutout ball. . . . Howard Payne RHP Johnathan Morris allowed just one earned run over eight innings and struck out six batters to beat Schreiner. . . . Texas Lutheran RHP Brad Orosey struck out six and scattered six hits over eight innings to beat Concordia Texas .
