FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - It's become old hat for the Louisiana College Softball team at the American Southwest Conference First Pitch Tournament. The Lady Wildcats opened the 2010 edition of the tournament, which pits teams from the SC East Division against those from the West, with a 7-0 win over Howard Payne and 5-1 win over Mary Hardin-Baylor to improve to 8-0 on the year.
As has become a trend early in the season, All-American pitcher Rene Schwartzenburg (Marksville, La./Marksville High) registered the win in both games.
Schwartzenburg, who last weekend picked up two wins in a road doubleheader against Mary Hardin-Baylor, improved to 6-0 on the year.
In game 1, Schwartzenburg pitched a complete game and struck out 16 while allowing just two hits and no runs to Howard Payne
She also received plenty of help from the LC offense with Kelsey Brown (Rayne, La./Notre Dame-Crowley) providing a three-RBI double, Devan Greene (Kaplan, La./Kaplan High) two RBI and two runs scored and Aimee Dubroc (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard) a 2-for-3 performance at the plate with a run batted in.
In game 2 versus Mary Hardin-Baylor, Kelly Williams (West Monroe, La./St. Thomas More High) got the start, but Scwartzenburg picked up the win after entering the game late.
In that contest, Brown was again solid at the plate going 2-for-2 with a three-run home run in the sixth to break the game open for the Lady Wildcats.
Amanda Martin (Prairieville, La./St. Amant High) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a run batted in.
LC concludes the ASC First Pitch tournament Saturday with a 10 a.m. game against Schreiner and a 3 p.m. game against Sul Ross.
